Client Profile 2011

If our community’s reliance on the Manna Food Bank can be considered the canary in the coal mine of the local economy, then the latest statistics seem to indicate that things have stabilized–or even improved, if only slightly.

After two tumultuous years in which food bank use increased a troubling 15% per year, in 2010 the number of households that turned to the Manna Food Bank to put groceries on the table dipped just over 3%, to 639 families.

More than one-third of Manna’s clients were couples with children. 25% were single parents with children. The remainder were adults without children.

Sixty percent of Manna’s clients are from Bracebridge. 23% are from Gravenhurst, with the remainder from Huntsville, Muskoka Lakes, Lake of Bays and Georgian Bay, respectively.

28% are on social assistance, 23% are receiving disability insurance, and 21% are employed. More than 80% live in rental housing.

Nearly 74% of food bank clients use the food bank four or fewer times per year.
